Class A — Commercial Banks: 20 licensed banks including Nabil, NIC Asia, Everest, Nepal Bank Ltd., Rastriya Banijya Bank. Largest institutions with widest reach.
Class B — Development Banks: Regional development banks with narrower operational scope, typically serving smaller cities and semi-urban areas.
Class C — Finance Companies: Smaller institutions focused on consumer and SME lending, usually offering slightly higher deposit rates.
The Nepal Rastra Bank sets monetary policy annually (published each Shrawan). The policy rate, bank rate, CRR and SLR are the primary tools for managing liquidity and inflation.
Interest Rate Spread is capped at 4.4% for all BFIs — the difference between weighted average lending and deposit rates cannot exceed this limit.
NRB publishes monthly weighted average rates for all licensed BFIs at nrb.org.np.
